:: Cusi Coyllur

Cusi Coyllur, (coo-see coy-your), an Inca princess name, is the dark, experimental solo project of pianist, singer and mental health advocate, Shannen Roberts. “Woke Up From a Lazy Dream” music video shows the hazy, mind-altered world she, her friends and partner at the time struggled to leave and depicts her panic attacks.

“It never feels like I’m in control of my body or my thoughts when I have a panic attack and it’s as if someone else has entered my body and is forcing it to shake, hyperventilate and scream,” said Shannen.

When writing the song, she remembered when her friends at a music school in high school revealed they had tried to commit suicide or were depressed and took drugs to cope. It was a scary realization that she was overwhelmingly not alone at the time in how she felt and dealt with it. “Bipolar Lovers in Love,” her upcoming EP, expresses the extreme polarities of her life, past destructive relationships and is a tribute to her healing journey thus far.

PITCH PERFECT: NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF PRESS AND PUBLICITY

A few good pieces of press can be the key to landing an opening slot on a tour, grabbing an A&R rep's attention, or bringing in new fans you may never have reached otherwise. Getting those first write-ups under your belt can sometimes seem impossible.

For this month's PLAG Workshop, moderated by Uproxx Music's Caitlin White, we have brought in a panel of female music writers and publicists to demystify the the press process.

:: Caitlin White: Caitlin White has been the Managing Editor of Uproxx Music for a little over a year, but has worked in the industry for the past five years at places like Complex, MTV, Stereogum and Brooklyn Magazine. From writing personal missives about Lorde and female-driven pop music, to reporting on more serious topics like sexual assault, sexism, and discrimination, her career has continually focused on empowering and uplifting women and the LGBQT community in this field. Her expertise further extends into hip-hop and folk/country, drawing parallels between previously divided factions of music and always seeking to break down stereotypes and boundaries between disparate genres. No matter what topic she's writing about, emotional reporting and empathy remain at the core of her work.

:: Danielle Bacher:: Danielle is a journalist known for her immersive, gonzo writing style, investigative stories and being plugged into the Los Angeles entertainment, music and literary scenes. She received her B.A. in Journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia. While in school, she began her career as an intern at Magnet, a renowned music magazine. Since moving to Southern California, she has contributed to Esquire, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, InStyle, GQ, Vanity Fair, Playboy, Maxim, Nylon, Men’s Health, Vice, Interview Magazine, LA Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, and served as Music Editor for the OC Weekly. In her work, she has profiled Amanda Knox after her final acquittal, musicians like Brian Wilson and Dave Navarro, actors Bill Hader, Bob Odenkirk, Nick Offerman, Charlie Hunnam and Chris Evans and legendary writer/directors David Lynch and Oliver Stone. She’s investigated Fox News and Roger Ailes, the Kesha and Dr. Luke saga, Katy Perry and a nun’s convent that housed pedophile priests and Chris Brown’s alleged drug use and downward spiral. Her favorite piece of work is a feature story for Esquire about her autistic brother’s experiences in the dating world. (http://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/sex/a42078/love-relationship-autism-spectrum/)

:: Katie Bain: Katie Bain is a writer and editor living in Los Angeles. Her work has appeared in and on websites, magazines and literary journals including Vice, Racked, Noisey, L.A. Weekly, the LA Times, Beatport News and The Rattling Wall. Her writing focuses primarily on music culture as it relates to artists, festivals, legal policy, history and travel. She loves bass music and national parks.

:: Caroline Borolla: Originally from Philadelphia but based in Los Angeles, veteran publicist Caroline Borolla joined the Clarion Call Media team in May 2016, bringing with her a host of wonderful talent such as Aloha, Casket Girls, Dan Deacon, Haley Bonar, Matt Pond PA, Orenda Fink, Steady Holiday, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Wire and many more. Over her 12+ year career, Borolla has worked at other esteemed companies such as Motormouth Media, Big Hassle and Riot Act Media. She has handled releases on virtually every great label in indie rock, including Domino, Merge, Kill Rock Stars, Temporary Residence, Saddle Creek, FatCat as well as festivals such as Outside Lands, The Governor's Ball, Bonnaroo and Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival.

:: Christine Morales: Christine Morales has been a music publicist for 10+ years. She spent the first half of her career working with artists at Motormouthmedia. Currently, Christine is the Director of Publicity at Epitaph/Anti- Records.

:: Mara Shalhoup: I've been the editor of the L.A. Weekly since February 2015, before which I served as editor of the Chicago Reader and of Atlanta's Creative Loafing. Back in my muckraking days, I won a Clarion Award for my portrayal of a teenage prostitute turned triple murderer, was a two-time Livingston Award finalist, and spent an inordinate amount of time obsessing over cocaine, hip-hop and organized crime (see BMF: The Rise and Fall of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family, St. Martin's Press).

PLAG PRESENTS at Harvard & Stone

Harvard & Stone
THURSDAY, August 31st

9PM

:: Doctrin ::

A Melbournian goth amidst the Los Angeles sun, Doctrin is the moniker of porcelain Australian, Dolly Denko. Relocating to California as an artist and producer, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Denko brings it all together in the studio under her own intricate compositions to create the powerfully capricious breeze of Doctrin.

Bringing a lustful presence to the stage alongside her live band, Doctrin delivers a powerfully honest performance during such nights; with a range of layering and effects, Denko herself wails in both vocals and grungy guitar riffs that are reminiscent of the 90’s alternative anthems.

:: Sugar Rum Tantrum

Sugar Rum Tantrum premieres as the Los Angeles folk-mischief-rambunction helmed by accordionist-songwriter Melinda West (Sugar Rum). A decade ago, Sugar Rum began her pursuits as a rock cabaret-inclined street performer. Eventually, the band stumbled down the rabbit hole of songwriting, incorporating tango, gypsy folk, stride, and blues into a tasty concoction. This four-piece spook folk band, frequently known to accompany the occasional fire performance or interpretive dancer, is making its debut with an EP release expected in October 2016.

:: PLEXXAGLASS ::

PLEXXAGLASS is a crisp salad of sounds ranging from alternative pop to indie folk to electronic. Lead by singer-songwriter Alexa Joan Rae, the key to finding the unique sound for PLEXXAGLASS was working with Kevin Billingslea of The Halo Studio in Portland, Maine.

The release of their single 'Lament en Route' (prod. by Kevin Billingslea) received rave feedback from indie bloggers and propelled the project's momentum towards success. Her follow-up, ‘Liar’, is a conversation about mental health. The song chronicles Joan Rae’s own struggles with depression and anxiety; the feeling of needing to put on a mask to function in a demanding society.

Throughout 2016, PLEXXAGLASS has performed in nationally known venues such as The Knitting Factory (Brooklyn), The Mint, Be Here Now, Cake Shop, and The Troubadour.
The project has recently expanded to a 4 piece: Alexa on Vocals/Keys, Lauren Stockner (Cruel Youth) on Bass, Ken Oak on Cello (Meg Myers band), and Sarah Luffred on Drums.

PLEXXAGLASS has been featured on IMPOSE Magazine, The Spill (Canada), ‘WorldArts’ as their February ’Spotlight Artist’, Idobi Radio , ‘Indiemono’ Spotify Playlist of over 30K followers, UK Indie Music Blogs ‘Where the Horn Blow’ and ‘A&R Factory', ‘Wolf in a Suit’ Indie Music Blog, Canada’s ‘Ohestee’ Indie Music Blog, and Poland’s ‘Zapetlone’ blog.

PLAG PRESENTS: Rival Cavves, Ruby and the Reckless, and Jasmine Sankaran

PLAG PRESENTS at Harvard & Stone Harvard & Stone Thursday, May 25th 21+ || FREE 9PM :: Rival Cavves ::  "Rival Cavves is a band of two rival neighbors who now make dance music together in the hopes of repairing their damaged companionship" Music by: Matthew Lieberman Vox & Lyrics by: Marissa Longstreet LISTEN ---> https://soundcloud.com/rivalcavves :: Ruby & The Reckless::  Ruby and The Reckless is Ruby Jane, Austin Simmons, Miggy Milla, Chris Copeland and Sam Powell. Fiddle prodigy Ruby Jane has been a fixture on the Austin roots scene since she was eleven years old, playing with everyone from Willie to Lady Gaga along the way. Now twenty-one, Ruby has spent the last two years redefining herself as a songwriter and vocalist, assembling a band of young players whose musicianship matches her own. The result is the new album In My Head, a collection of psyche-tinged, fiddle-driven, hook-laden ear candy produced by Frenchie Smith. This full band effort written entirely with bassist Austin Simmons and arranged by the group(Miggy Milla, guitar & vocals, Sam Powell, keys, Chris Copeland, drums & vocals), veers sharply from roots music toward catchy pop-rock, pushing the sonic envelope with patches, pedals, and live effects that keep the fiddle front and center, but often sounding like anything but a fiddle. As always, Ruby’s musicianship is daring and inventive, and producer Frenchie Smith adds a studio gloss that perfectly fits the dreamy vibe of the new tunes while pushing Ruby’s confident vocals forward in the mix. :: White Sea ::
Kibby has embarked on a solo project since touring with M83, called White Sea, which is a translation of her surname. Her first track, a remix of Solid Gold's "Synchronize", first appeared on her MySpace. A second track titled "Overdrawn" was released to her MySpace in March, revealing a new musical direction for Kibby. On September 30, a new track, "Mountaineer", became available for free download on the RCRD LBL website. An EP, The self-produced In Cold Blood, Kibby's first full-length album, was released in May 2014 via Crush Music and Songs Publishing, and features songs co-written with Greg Kurstin and Mark Ronson. She described it as a break-up record where she "had to express myself through my music. It was the only way to purge myself of this extreme grief and loss". The album was toured as support to The Naked and Famous.

:: Wolf Prize ::
Wolf Prize: Ethereal and emotional soundscapes in outer space.
"This is a trio of extremely talented musicians who know about the past but make music for the eternal present. They play by their own rules: no standard drum kit, no endless choruses, no end to bandleader Tori Roggeman's vocal range, and no need to explain themselves. But don't worry—you'll be more than happy with the way they reflect your own emotions right back at you." - D.M. Collins, LA Record

:: Alyeska ::
Alyeska, formed by song writer and guitarist Alaska Reid who moved from a small town in Montana. Alyeska is a three piece band. Alaska met drummer Ben Spear, and began to further form a dynamic sound that was still heavy but that left room for Alaska. Just this year the band recorded three songs with producer John Agnello whose credits include Dinosaur Jr, Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth and Phosphorescent-- all artists that inspire the band.

:: Cassandra ::
Cassandra is a feminist art-rock power-ballad pop group based out of Los Angeles California. We have glitter in our eyes and fervor in our hearts. We sing truth to power and rage against violence and silence. We are always looking for people to join the band. Cassandra is also a concept, a performance project, an experimental theatre work, an incubator of collective practice, a feminist action, a cultural impact, a space for creative participation, a vehicle for radical social justice ideas to be aestheticized in a fiercely feminine way, a spectacle, an art event, and an educational activist project.
